Teaching OBGYNs about Vasectomy
Earlier this month, I had the privilege of presenting at the North Carolina OBGYN Society on the topic: Vasectomy for the OBGYN Provider. In this presentation, I spoke to leading OBGYNs in the state on how vasectomy is an important medical procedure that we need to start providing. Many patients are unable to find a vasectomy close to their home and in a way that meets their needs.
At this conference, I was able to share my professional journey to become a vasectomy provider, specifically that I was frustrated at seeing how many of my female OBGYN patients were having unplanned pregnancies or were at risk of unplanned pregnancies because their partners could not get their desired vasectomies. Too many men are stuck because they call large urology offices or large academic medical centers. They are scheduled months out for consultations, and then the procedures are months later. No one is able to tell them how much they will have to pay. Often the consultation or vasectomy is cancelled or re-scheduled, causing more frustration. All of this for a simple, 15 minute outpatient procedure that I offer conveniently in our office on the Durham-Chapel Hill line at HisChoiceDurham.
Sharing our patient-centered approach
At this conference with OBGYN leaders and providers throughout North Carolina, I was able to share them the patient-centered approach that we have at His Choice Vasectomy.
Providers from across the state were impressed that we offer a single visit, convenient, minimally invasive vasectomy procedure to patients. Many of these OBGYNs have heard their patients face all of the typical scheduling challenges when their partners try to schedule through large vasectomy offices or large academic hospitals. The OBGYNs in the audience were excited to learn about the His Choice way, and how we eliminate the long, unnecessary delays for pre-operative appointments, and to learn about the quick & convenient online scheduling and the transparent pricing.
During the presentation, I answered countless questions from the OBGYN audience. They were curious about how we at His Choice Durham found a way to make the process so seamless. OBGYNs from the mountain areas around Asheville, down from Charlotte, in the triad, and all the way to the beaches were very interested and wanted information to send their patience to us here at His Choice in the triangle.
Overall, it was exciting to be able to teach other OBGYNs about incorporating this highly effective procedure into my clinical practice and the different ways that I’m able to deliver the service.
Spring Vasectomies
As we enjoy this nice spring weather (except for the pollen), I continue to hear from patients about how challenging it is to obtain of vasectomy in their area with the larger urologic practices or through big academic institutions. As an expert in surgical sterilization and family planning, it was such an honor to be invited speaker to this group of OB/GYN providers and leaders throughout the state and share our successful approach.
These efforts were picked up in a recent news release that you can read more about here.
Throughout my medical career, I have always enjoyed speaking at conferences to teach others about the parts of reproductive medicine that I am most passionate about. The North Carolina OBGYN Society’s annual meeting was a highlight of my academic career, and I hope I inspired other OBGYNs to consider offering this procedure as part of their practice.
